David is our Managing Director and manages our nation-wide staff of employment law consultants, and office support staff. He has a law degree and practised law for some years after graduating from the University of Otago in 1986 before becoming an employment law consultant. He has specialised in employment law since 1993, when he started specialising as an employment law barrister in Auckland.
He appeared in the District Court and High Court in his early years as a lawyer, when he handled civil, family law, and criminal law matters. After specialising in employment law, he appeared many times in the Employment Tribunal, before it became the Employment Relations Authority in 2000. He has also handled cases in the Employment Relations Authority and Employment Court. One of his cases, Roberts v Commissioner of Police, was, he believes, quite influential in having the Police disciplinary process taken out of a specialised industrial tribunal and dealt with in the Authority.
Although based in Auckland, David is available to attend ERA and Employment Court hearings throughout New Zealand. He can also visit you at your worksite to discuss any employment law issues you may have.
David has attended many mediations from 1993 until today. He estimates that he has attended approximately 1500. As a result he knows most of the mediators in New Zealand particularly as he attends many mediations via teleconference.
He now handles many matters for corporate clients and employee clients. He also assists and oversees our employment law advocates and staff throughout New Zealand.
